Day Ladies Report | Spring 2016

By: Faith Piccolo, Day Ladies

The Mayflower Day Ladies had a great 2015-16 curling season. We celebrated every holiday on the calendar with food and merriment. These social gatherings are a great opportunity for us to get to know each other. In November, we hosted the Metro Ladies Bonspiel, welcoming teams from the Halifax, Lakeshore and Dartmouth Curling Clubs.

We raised money through our annual Bake and Book Sale, and through our newest fundraiser, Chase the Button. We donated heaps of Christmas gifts, along with money, to our chosen charity, Adsum House. And amidst it all we found time to curl twice a week, and enjoy some friendly competition.

We’ll capped off the season with a fun day on April 12, 2016. We encouraged members to bring any friends who might like to try curling. We’ll provided instruction and encouragement. Then we finished off the session in the Myers Room with pizza.

We picked up a five new members this year; but we’re always looking for more. And, as women reach retirement age, we encourage them to think about joining the Mayflower Day Ladies. It provides an ideal avenue for physical activity and social interaction with an eclectic group of women. Even if you’ve never curled before, we provide clinics and instruction to get you on the ice and enjoying the game.

As the curling year winds down we move on to less frosty pursuits. The Day Ladies golf day this year will happen on June 7th at Indian Lake Golf Course. If you want to sign up, get in touch with me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. It’s 9-holes followed by lunch…of course.

And again this year, Mayflower upstairs will become a yoga studio for the summer. Starting in mid-May and running until mid-August, every Tuesday evening prepare to hit the mat and stretch out those hamstrings . Namaste. For more information contact Mary Mattatall at

Club Information

Founded in 1905, the Mayflower Curling Club is a landmark in Halifax's rich history. In 1912 the ice shed was used as a morgue for victims of the infamous Titanic sinking, and just five years later the club was destroyed in the devastating Halifax explosion. The Mayflower, which houses eight sheets of ice for leagues of all levels, is one of the most well-known clubs in Canada. We embrace all levels of curling from beginners to competitive and we hope to see you on the ice soon.
