HOW IT ALL BEGAN. . .
The Dixie Curling Centre is located in the heart of what was once Mississauga’s rich farm belt. A meeting in Vic Stanfield’s basement on November 12, 1955 led to the idea of starting Dixie Curling. The foundation work began on June 28, 1956 at a cost of just under $200,000 for land, building, ice plant, furniture and equipment. With thanks to the hard work of Vic and Gordon Stanfield, the club was incorporated on March 1, 1956. The first draw took place on November 14, 1956.
The six-sheet facility, with more than 600 members, is going strong, celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2016. Dixie is proud of its history. With a solid core of energetic and enthusiastic volunteers Dixie has established a reputation for hospitality, good curling, good fellowship and sportsmanship. Dixie is not only noted for its warm hospitable environment; it is also proud of its curling reputation. Over the years Dixie has been and still is the home of many curling champions.
The Dixie Curling Centre is a member-driven space, striving to provide a social environment for all ages. Dixie offers excellent instructional, recreational and competitive programs to the surrounding community. The Centre has operated in its original location since 1956 and has provided recreational opportunities to the residents of Mississauga and surrounding communities. Dixie continues its long-standing tradition of friendliness where everyone is made to feel welcome.
A full-time ice maker and their staff professionally maintain the 6 sheets of ice and the club is staffed by knowledgeable, devoted people who have a passion for the sport. Leagues operate each day of the week and there are daytime and evening leagues to meet virtually any curler’s level of play and interest. Within the facility members and guests enjoy a safe, clean and pleasant environment offering a full-service lounge, locker rooms, banquet hall and meeting rooms.
Operating as a not-for-profit organization the centre is managed by a volunteer board of directors. The board is elected and installed each year at our annual general meeting. The Board of Directors and member feedback provide a voice in the direction of the operations at Dixie.
